Lucifer in Starlight
by George Meredith
On a starred night Prince Lucifer uprose.
Once upon a starry night, the prince of hell decided to up rise; up rise has a double meanings– to awaken or fight
Tired of his dark dominion swung the fiend
Lucifer up rose because he was tired of hell
Above the rolling ball in cloud part screened,
Lucifer now up rises above the earth
Where sinners hugged their spectre of repose.
On earth, there are sinners clinging to their "natural thoughts" –the earth is full of sinners hell-bent on peace and rest
Poor prey to his hot fit of pride were those.
The people of earth, who cling to thoughts of rest, are the "poor prey" of Lucifer– the sinners (the people who are destined to one day join Lucifer in hell)
And now upon his western wing he leaned,
"For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be." – Gospel of Matthew 24:27
Refers to the second coming of Christ– that the son of God will come again from the East; implying that Lucifer will attack/come from the other side (the west)
Now his huge bulk o'er Afric's sands careened,
A “bulk” is a ship; Lucifer is sailing on the seas of the earth. In the last line, he was flying in the skies. He has now descended upon the earth. His ship is now careened, turned over on the sands of Africa. Lucifer chooses to sail to Africa because of its similarities to hell– endless and undeveloped
Now the black planet shadowed Arctic snows.
The "black planet" is Lucifer, and now the shadow of his planet--that of hell and darkness--has darkened the snowy Arctic region. Black covers white. Lucifer is trying to take over.
Soaring through wider zones that pricked his scars
With his shadow already hovering over the Arctic, Lucifer proceeds to "wider zones", other lands. Flying back into the sky, Lucifer experiences his "scars" being "pricked." Lucifer is a former angel who has damaged himself through pride and as a result bears scars on his body. Something or someone in the is pricking as Lucifer’s scars– possibly God
With memory of the old revolt from Awe,
“Awe” (possibly derivative of the name Yahweh) is a reference to God. As Lucifer’s scars are being pricked, he begins to reflect back on his memories of the first revolt he had against God
He reached a middle height, and at the stars,
Lucifer is only able to rise up as far as the stars; he has not reached his intended destination– the heavens
Which are the brain of heaven, he looked, and sank.
The stars are “the brain of heaven”. Lucifer begins to sink when he looks at the stars. The stars represent God’s wisdom. Lucifer sees the order God ordained, and realizes he no longer belongs and in response he falls
Around the ancient track marched, rank on rank,
The stars begin to take on a militaristic persona, marching around Lucifer– he has lost the battle.
The army of unalterable law.
The law of the universe is ordered by God and there for it is not able to be altered. The army of heaven has defeated Lucifer, who exists outside of God's laws
